The Pale Sand Martin is a small, migratory swallow found in central Asia and wintering in South Asia. It is distinguished by its very pale plumage, especially on the underparts, and a weak breast band.
Where to spot
Breeds in open habitats near sandy banks of rivers and lakes in Central Asia. Winters in similar open areas, often near water, across the Indian subcontinent.
How to spot
Look for its very pale, sandy-brown upperparts and nearly white underparts with a very faint or absent breast band. Observe its agile flight as it catches insects over open water or land.
When to spot
Breeding season (spring/summer) in Central Asia; winter months (autumn/winter) in South Asia.
