Spotted
The Kererū is the sole native pigeon of mainland New Zealand, recognized by its iridescent green and bronze plumage on the head and back, sharply contrasting with a pure white belly. It is a large, distinctive bird often seen feeding on native fruits.
Where to spot
Throughout the main islands of New Zealand (Te Ika-a-Māui and Te Waipounamu) and some offshore islands, wherever sufficient native forest or large exotic trees are present.
How to spot
Look for its large size and striking plumage in native forests, gardens, and parks. Listen for its distinctive wing beats and deep, cooing calls. Often seen perching prominently or flying ponderously.
When to spot
Year-round, active during daylight hours. Most visible during fruiting seasons when they are actively feeding.

The Kererū is famous for its often clumsy, loud flight, producing a distinctive 'whoosh' sound from its wings, especially when taking off or landing, a sound easily heard in New Zealand's forests.
