Spotted
The Marquesas Ground Dove is a critically endangered and extremely rare species, endemic to the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia. It represents a vulnerable lineage of Pacific doves.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia. Currently found on only a few islands, primarily in undisturbed upland forests.
How to spot
Observing this bird is extraordinarily challenging. It requires authorized access to protected, remote forest areas on the Marquesas, extreme patience, and an understanding of its specific, limited habitat needs.
When to spot
Year-round, but observations are exceedingly rare given its critically endangered status and small, fragmented populations.
This species has suffered severe population declines due to habitat destruction and predation by introduced species, making it one of the most endangered birds in the world.
