Widespread in Central Africa, from Nigeria to Uganda and DR Congo. Inhabits grasslands, savannas, cultivation, and forest edges, often near water.
How to spot
Look for it feeding on grass seeds in open, grassy areas. The black cap is a very clear distinguishing feature. Listen for its high-pitched trilling calls.

Year-round. Best observed when active in small to large flocks, especially early mornings and late afternoons.
