The Black-crowned Waxbill is a small, attractive finch found across Central Africa. It is easily recognized by its black cap, contrasting with a grey face, brown back, and finely barred underparts.
Where to spot
Widespread in Central Africa, from Nigeria to Uganda and DR Congo. Inhabits grasslands, savannas, cultivation, and forest edges, often near water.
How to spot
Look for it feeding on grass seeds in open, grassy areas. The black cap is a very clear distinguishing feature. Listen for its high-pitched trilling calls.
When to spot
Year-round. Best observed when active in small to large flocks, especially early mornings and late afternoons.
