Spotted
The Gouldian Finch is arguably one of the most colourful finches in the world, endemic to northern Australia. It is famous for its vibrant plumage in shades of green, yellow, red, black, and blue.
Where to spot
Endemic to northern Australia, primarily in the savanna woodlands of the Kimberley and Top End regions, always near water sources.
How to spot
Look for their spectacular array of colours, especially near water sources or in open woodlands. They are often seen feeding on grass seeds on the ground. Be patient as they can be shy.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round, but most easily seen during the dry season (May to October) when they concentrate around waterholes.

Gouldian Finches are born with distinctive blue, light-reflective nodules on the sides of their bill, which help parents locate them in dark nests.
