Spotted
The Papuan Scrub Robin is a terrestrial bird endemic to New Guinea, known for its cryptic brown plumage and ground-dwelling habits. It is often heard before it is seen, rustling in the leaf litter.
Where to spot
Endemic to New Guinea, found in lowland and hill rainforests, particularly in areas with dense undergrowth and deep leaf litter.
How to spot
Listen for the characteristic rustling sounds on the forest floor. Stay very still and scan the leaf litter. Patience is crucial, as they are often shy and well-camouflaged.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active during the early morning and late afternoon. Its secretive nature makes it challenging to observe directly.
Similar to its Australian relatives, this scrub robin is an expert at finding food by vigorously kicking aside leaves and debris on the forest floor, a behavior known as 'leaf-kicking'.
