Spotted
The Ashy-headed Robin is a small, demure flyrobin species from New Guinea, characterized by its greyish head and olive-brown body. It typically inhabits the forest understory.
Where to spot
Found in New Guinea and some smaller adjacent islands, preferring lowland and hill rainforests, especially the denser parts of the understory.
How to spot
Search the lower levels of dense forests. Its quiet nature and camouflaged plumage require patience. Listen for its soft, unassuming calls to help locate it.
When to spot
Present year-round. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon, when light penetration into the forest is often better.
Like many forest-dwelling robins, the Ashy-headed Robin is a 'sit-and-wait' predator, patiently observing from a perch before darting out to snatch an insect.
