The Pied Butcherbird is a medium-sized, common Australian songbird renowned for its stunning, carolling song. It has a distinctive black and white plumage pattern and a powerful, hooked bill.
Where to spot
Widespread across most of Australia (absent from extreme southeast and southwest). Found in open woodlands, farmlands, parks, and suburban gardens.
How to spot
Listen carefully for their rich, musical calls. Look for them perched conspicuously on power lines, fences, or branches in open areas. Their bold black and white pattern is unmistakable.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Highly vocal throughout the year, but particularly so during the breeding season (spring/summer) when their songs are most frequent.
