Widespread across northern and eastern coastal Australia, New Guinea, and some surrounding islands. Found in rainforests, woodlands, mangroves, and increasingly in urban parks and gardens.
How to spot
Locate fruiting trees, especially figs, as they often feed in flocks. Listen for their varied calls, which include harsh notes and melodious whistles. Observe their bright facial patches.
When to spot
Year-round residents in most of their range, though some populations show local movements in response to food availability. Most active during daylight hours.
