The Maroon Oriole is a beautiful and relatively large songbird, notable for the rich maroon and black plumage of the male. Females are typically duller, with more muted colors.
Where to spot
Widespread across parts of South and Southeast Asia, from the Himalayas to Indochina and parts of Indonesia, typically found in broadleaf evergreen forests.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic, fluty 'wee-ou' or 'ori-ole' calls which often betray its presence. Look for movement and flashes of color in the upper canopy, especially near fruiting trees.
When to spot
Present year-round in its resident range. Vocal activity, especially singing, increases during the breeding season.
