Spotted
The White-bellied Figbird is a medium-sized, fruit-eating bird belonging to the figbird genus within the oriole family. It is characterized by its duller plumage compared to other figbirds, with a distinctive white belly.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Cape York Peninsula in far northern Queensland, Australia, primarily found in rainforests and adjacent eucalypt woodlands.
How to spot
Look for them foraging in the canopy of fig trees or other fruiting trees. Their calls are typically harsh and scolding, but they can also produce more melodious notes.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in its restricted range, often active during the fruiting seasons of its preferred trees.
Like other figbirds, the White-bellied Figbird is highly frugivorous, playing an important role in seed dispersal for various native fig species in its habitat.
