The Green-backed Oriole is a common and widespread bird found across Australia and New Guinea, characterized by its olive-green back and often bright yellow underparts. It is a vocal inhabitant of forests and woodlands.
Where to spot
Widespread across northern and eastern Australia, New Guinea, and some eastern Indonesian islands. Found in a variety of wooded habitats, including rainforests, eucalyptus woodlands, and suburban areas.
How to spot
Look for its olive-green back, yellow underparts, and often a reddish eye. Listen for its distinctive, far-carrying, flute-like whistles and bubbling calls, which are a characteristic sound of its habitat.
When to spot
Year-round resident in most areas. Most vocal during the breeding season (spring and summer), but can be heard throughout the year.
