The Austral Canastero is a somewhat plain ovenbird with a streaked back and a pale supercilium, found in open, arid environments of southern South America. It is a migratory species.
Where to spot
Arid and semi-arid grasslands, shrub-steppes, and open patagonian scrublands in Argentina and Chile. Migrates northward in winter.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on the ground or perching on low bushes. Listen for its high-pitched, often sputtering calls. It can be quite secretive and flush suddenly from cover.
When to spot
Best observed during the austral summer (November-March) in its breeding grounds. During migration, it can be seen in a wider range of habitats.
