Spotted
The Wing-banded Hornero is a medium-sized Furnariid known for the rufous wing-band often visible in flight. Like other horneros, it's famous for building distinctive mud nests.
Where to spot
Found in northwestern South America, including parts of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, inhabiting open woodlands, savannas, and agricultural areas, often near water.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on the ground in open grassy areas or perching conspicuously. The rufous wing-band is a key identification feature. Watch for its impressive mud nests, usually on tree branches or fence posts.
When to spot
Active year-round. Nesting activity is most pronounced during the breeding season.
