Tristram's Storm-Petrel is a large, uniformly dark storm-petrel with a slightly forked tail. It is a nocturnal breeder endemic to the Northwest Pacific Ocean.
Where to spot
Breeds on islands in the Northwest Pacific, including the Hawaiian archipelago (e.g., Laysan, Midway) and the Izu, Bonin, and Volcano Islands of Japan. Disperses in surrounding Pacific waters.
How to spot
Look for its uniformly dark, sooty-brown plumage, large size for a storm-petrel, and a slightly forked tail. Often flies with slow, steady wingbeats. Best observed on pelagic trips in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands or off Japan.
