Spotted
Tristram's Storm-Petrel is a large, uniformly dark storm-petrel with a slightly forked tail. It is a nocturnal breeder endemic to the Northwest Pacific Ocean.
Where to spot
Breeds on islands in the Northwest Pacific, including the Hawaiian archipelago (e.g., Laysan, Midway) and the Izu, Bonin, and Volcano Islands of Japan. Disperses in surrounding Pacific waters.
How to spot
Look for its uniformly dark, sooty-brown plumage, large size for a storm-petrel, and a slightly forked tail. Often flies with slow, steady wingbeats. Best observed on pelagic trips in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands or off Japan.
When to spot
Present at breeding colonies from November to May. Can be observed at sea during the northern winter and spring months in the Central and Western Pacific.
This species nests in burrows and rock crevices on remote volcanic islands, relying on the cover of darkness to enter and leave its colonies to avoid predators.
