Spotted
The Akohekohe, or Crested Honeycreeper, is an endangered Hawaiian honeycreeper endemic to Maui. It is a large, striking bird with glossy black plumage, white streaking, a reddish-orange head, and a distinctive golden-orange crest.
Where to spot
Endangered and restricted to a small area of high-elevation native wet forests on the eastern slopes of Haleakalā, Maui, Hawaii, primarily within the Hanawi and Kipahulu Natural Area Reserves.
How to spot
Focus on mature 'ōhi'a forests in its restricted range. Look for its large size, glossy black plumage, and prominent orange crest and head. Listen for its loud, gurgling, and complex song, which carries well through the forest.
When to spot
A year-round resident, but very rare and challenging to observe due to its remote habitat. Best chances are during early mornings when actively feeding on 'ōhi'a nectar.
