The African Quailfinch is a widespread and common small finch across sub-Saharan Africa. It exhibits a quail-like behavior, walking on the ground through grass, and is subtly patterned with a black face in males.
Where to spot
Widespread in grasslands, savannas, and cultivated areas across sub-Saharan Africa. Prefers open, grassy habitats.
How to spot
Look for it walking silently through grass. If startled, it will fly quickly and low, dropping back into cover. Listen for its distinctive high-pitched trill.
When to spot
Year-round. Most easily observed when males are singing from low perches during the breeding season, or when accidentally flushed.
These birds are known for their explosive, rapid flight when flushed, often uttering a sharp call as they burst from cover.
