Where to spot
Widespread across eastern and southeastern Australia, found in a variety of habitats including forests, woodlands, grasslands, and gardens, usually near water.
How to spot
Look for small flocks foraging on the ground in grassy areas. The red stripe above the eye and red rump are key identification features. Listen for their high-pitched 'seep' calls.

Can be observed year-round. Breeding mainly occurs from September to May (Southern Hemisphere), when they are more active and vocal.
These finches are known to occasionally feed on insects, supplementing their primary diet of grass seeds.
