Spotted
Shelley's Crimsonwing is a rare and elusive finch of the high-altitude forests of the Albertine Rift. It is notable for its vibrant red back and wings, contrasting with a dark head and underparts.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Albertine Rift mountains (Rwanda, Uganda, DR Congo, Burundi), found in dense montane and bamboo forests at very high elevations.
How to spot
Requires dedicated effort in its specific high-altitude forest habitats. Look for it feeding on seeds in the understory. Listening for its distinctive calls can be crucial for detection.
When to spot
Year-round, but highly localized and challenging to find due to its rarity and preferred dense habitat. Early mornings might offer the best chance.
