The African Pied Wagtail is a common and widespread wagtail species across sub-Saharan Africa. It is easily recognized by its bold black and white plumage and prominent white wing bars.
Where to spot
Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal east to Somalia and south to South Africa. Found in a wide range of habitats near water, including rivers, lakes, ponds, urban areas, and cultivated land.
How to spot
Look for its striking black and white plumage, especially the broad white wing bars. It constantly bobs its tail as it walks and forages on the ground. Its calls are distinctive and often heard.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Active throughout the day.

This species is highly associated with human activity and often forages confidently in gardens, parks, and even inside houses, much like the Pied Wagtail (Motacilla alba) in Europe.
