Spotted
The African Firefinch is a widespread and attractive finch found across sub-Saharan Africa. Males are deep crimson red with a black lower belly and dark bill, while females are duller.
Where to spot
Widespread in woodlands, savannas, and forest edges across sub-Saharan Africa. Often found in areas with dense undergrowth.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on the ground or in low bushes. The male's deep crimson plumage and black belly are key identification features. Listen for its soft, rising 'wit-wit-wit' calls.
When to spot
Year-round and generally easily observed. Most active in early mornings and late afternoons.
This species is a common host for brood parasitic Paradise Whydahs, which lay their eggs in the firefinch's nests.
