The Zebra Dove is a small, slender dove recognized by its fine barring patterns on the neck and breast, resembling zebra stripes. It is a popular cage bird and has established populations beyond its native Southeast Asian range.
Where to spot
Native to Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines), but widely introduced to many Pacific islands, including Hawaii, and other tropical regions, thriving in open country, cultivated areas, parks, and gardens.
How to spot
Look for its small size, long tail, and distinctive black and white barring on the neck, breast, and flanks. Listen for its soft, melodic cooing call, often described as "kwau-wa-kwau" or similar.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, often seen foraging on the ground in open grassy areas, especially during cooler parts of the morning and late afternoon.
