The Wire-tailed Swallow is a distinctive and widespread swallow found across Africa and Asia. It is easily recognized by its glossy blue-black upperparts, rufous crown, and two extremely long, fine 'wires' extending from its tail.
Where to spot
Open country, grasslands, agricultural areas, and human settlements, always near water (rivers, lakes, ponds), throughout sub-Saharan Africa and tropical Asia.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive 'wire' tail streamers in flight. Also note its rufous crown and glossy blue-black back. Often seen perching on wires or low vegetation near water.
When to spot
Year-round resident in most of its range. Active during daylight hours.
