Spotted
This distinctive hybrid combines the striking black, white, and gray patterns of the Barnacle Goose (Branta leucopsis) with the more subtle markings of the Cackling Goose (Branta hutchinsii). It's a rare and often eye-catching find.
Where to spot
Open grasslands, wetlands, and coastal areas, particularly in Europe where Barnacle Geese are common, or in North America near captive waterfowl collections or areas with vagrant Barnacle Geese.
How to spot
Look for a bird with the overall dark body of a Cackling Goose but with distinct white facial markings, potentially extending up the forehead like a Barnacle Goose, or showing a more extensive white cheek patch. The chest might be lighter gray than a typical Cackling Goose.
When to spot
Potentially year-round in areas with resident populations, or during migration periods of the Cackling Goose if a vagrant Barnacle Goose is involved.

While Barnacle Geese are typically found in Europe and Greenland, their hybrids with North American Cackling Geese can occur due to vagrant individuals or escapes from captive collections, making sightings quite unusual.
