Spotted
This hybrid duck is a product of cross-breeding between the American Wigeon and the Northern Pintail. It exhibits a blend of physical traits from both parent species, often presenting an intriguing challenge for bird identification. These hybrids are generally rare.
Where to spot
Found primarily in North America, particularly where the ranges of American Wigeons and Northern Pintails overlap during breeding or wintering. Search in freshwater marshes, ponds, lakes, and flooded fields.
How to spot
Identify by looking for intermediate plumage characteristics, such as a head pattern combining elements of both species, or a body shape that is not distinctly wigeon-like or pintail-like. Note their calls and flight patterns, which might also be mixed.
When to spot
Best observed during fall and spring migration or in wintering areas when both parent species are congregated. Opportunities for observation are highest when large mixed flocks of dabbling ducks are present.
Hybrids between duck species are relatively common in the wild, especially among dabbling ducks, as different species often share similar habitats and breeding grounds, and sometimes fail to recognize or prefer their own species.
