Brant x Red-breasted Goose Hybrid

Brant x Red-breasted Goose Hybrid

-
Not yet spotted on Fladder
Spotted
A very rare hybrid, this bird displays characteristics of both the dark, coastal Brant and the small, brightly patterned Red-breasted Goose. Plumage may appear as an intermediate shade of dark grey or black, with subtle hints of the red and white patterns of the Red-breasted Goose.
Where to spot
Extremely unlikely to be encountered in the wild due to the geographical separation of their natural habitats. Most plausible in specialized captive waterfowl collections.
How to spot
Look for a goose with a generally dark body similar to a Brant, but with some red or white markings on the neck and chest reminiscent of a Red-breasted Goose. Pay close attention to overall size and bill shape, which may be intermediate.
When to spot
Year-round in captive environments. Wild occurrences would be purely accidental and opportunistic.
Such a hybrid would be an exceptionally unusual sighting in the wild due to the different breeding and wintering ranges of the parent species, making any observation highly significant.
