Spotted
This refers to two of the largest and heaviest subspecies of the Canada Goose, Branta canadensis moffitti and Branta canadensis maxima. They are known for their impressive size and successful adaptation to various habitats, including urban environments.
Where to spot
Widely distributed across North America, particularly in temperate regions, agricultural areas, parks, golf courses, and open water bodies. Also introduced to parts of Europe.
How to spot
Identify by their very large size, long neck, and prominent black head and neck with a distinct white 'chinstrap' across the throat and cheeks. They are often seen grazing in open fields or swimming in lakes and ponds. Listen for their familiar honking calls.
When to spot
Year-round in many settled areas where they have established resident populations. Migratory movements are most prominent during spring and autumn.
The Giant Canada Goose (B. c. maxima) was once thought extinct in the wild in the early 20th century but was rediscovered in Minnesota in the 1960s, leading to successful conservation and reintroduction efforts.
