A small, distinctive cotinga species found in the arid and semi-arid regions of southern South America. It is recognized by its rufous tail and the plant-cutting bill characteristic of its genus.
Where to spot
Arid and semi-arid scrublands, open woodlands, and agricultural areas in central Argentina, Chile, and parts of Bolivia and Paraguay.
How to spot
Look for it in scrubby habitats, often perched visibly on a bush. Observe its unique feeding behavior of 'cutting' plant parts. Listen for its harsh, rasping calls.
When to spot
Resident throughout the year. Most active during the day, often feeding on low shrubs.
