Spotted
A small, distinctive cotinga species found in the arid and semi-arid regions of southern South America. It is recognized by its rufous tail and the plant-cutting bill characteristic of its genus.
Where to spot
Arid and semi-arid scrublands, open woodlands, and agricultural areas in central Argentina, Chile, and parts of Bolivia and Paraguay.
How to spot
Look for it in scrubby habitats, often perched visibly on a bush. Observe its unique feeding behavior of 'cutting' plant parts. Listen for its harsh, rasping calls.
