Spotted
The White-throated Kingfisher is a widespread and common species across Asia and parts of Europe, recognizable by its bright blue upperparts, chestnut head and belly, and a prominent white throat and breast.
Where to spot
Widespread from southeastern Europe and Turkey through the Middle East, South Asia, and Southeast Asia to China. Inhabits open country, farmlands, woodlands, and gardens, often near water but also in dry areas.
How to spot
Look for its vibrant blue back and white throat as it perches conspicuously on wires, posts, or bare branches. Its loud, cackling calls, 'chick-chick-chick-chrrrrr', are unmistakable and often given in flight.
When to spot
Resident year-round in most of its range, though some populations are migratory. Active during daylight hours, especially in the mornings and late afternoons.
