Spotted
The White-shouldered Fire-eye is a medium-sized antbird, notable for the prominent white patch on the shoulder of the male, which contrasts with his otherwise glossy black plumage. Females are primarily rufous-brown.
Where to spot
Found in the understory and mid-story of humid forests, particularly the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil and adjacent Paraguay and Argentina.
How to spot
Listen for their loud, ringing vocalizations, which are often given from dense cover. Patience is key, as they can be skulking and difficult to spot amidst the foliage.
When to spot
Observable throughout the year, with increased activity during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning and late afternoon.
