Spotted
The White-collared Kite is a rare and localized raptor endemic to a small region of eastern Brazil. It is similar in appearance to the Gray-headed Kite but distinguished by a distinctive white collar and unique vocalizations.
Where to spot
Atlantic Forest fragments in the states of Pernambuco and Alagoas, northeastern Brazil. It is critically endangered due to severe habitat loss.
How to spot
Look for its grey head, white underparts, and crucially, a distinct white collar separating the grey head from the black back. Listening for its specific, high-pitched calls can also aid identification in its very restricted range.
When to spot
Year-round, but very difficult to find due to its extreme rarity and limited range. Sightings are extremely infrequent.

This species was only recognized as distinct from the Gray-headed Kite in 2004, highlighting the ongoing discovery of biodiversity even among larger birds of prey.
