Spotted
The Eastern Chanting Goshawk is a medium-sized raptor found in eastern Africa, closely related to the Dark Chanting Goshawk but distinguished by subtle plumage differences and often a darker grey tone. It shares the characteristic chanting calls and ground-hunting habits.
Where to spot
Dry savannas, acacia woodlands, and thornbush in East Africa, from Sudan and Ethiopia south to Tanzania.
How to spot
Look for its grey plumage, white-barred underparts, and reddish legs and cere. Differentiate it from the Dark Chanting Goshawk by its range and subtle plumage nuances. Listen for its distinctive calls, which are often the first indication of its presence.
When to spot
Year-round, active during daylight. Often seen perched on dead trees or poles, surveying the ground for prey.
