The Spotted Screech Owl is a small, cryptic owl found in mountainous regions from the southwestern United States to Central America. Its plumage, adorned with fine spotting, provides excellent camouflage against tree bark.
Where to spot
Found in mountainous areas of southwestern North America and Central America, favoring canyons, oak woodlands, and riparian areas.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive 'bouncing ball' call or a rapid trill. During the day, carefully check tree cavities, dense foliage, or large branches close to the trunk for roosting owls.
When to spot
Primarily nocturnal, becoming active at dusk. Listen for its calls from early spring through summer, especially on clear nights.
