Spotted
The Black Dwarf Hornbill is a small, entirely black hornbill found in the lowland rainforests of West and Central Africa. It has a relatively small, black bill with a casque that is less prominent than in larger hornbill species.
Where to spot
Found in West and Central Africa, from Sierra Leone east to Uganda and Angola. Inhabits humid lowland rainforests and mature secondary forests.
How to spot
Look for its small size and entirely black plumage, including the bill and casque. It is generally quiet, but listen for its soft, low-pitched 'hoo-hoo' calls. Often seen darting through dense foliage.
When to spot
Resident year-round in its forest habitat. Active during daylight hours, often observed foraging in the mid-story or understory.
Black Dwarf Hornbills are known for their quiet and secretive nature, often foraging alone or in pairs in the forest understory, making them challenging to spot despite their contrasting color.
