Endemic to Sulawesi and some nearby smaller islands (e.g., Buton, Muna, Peleng, Togian Islands) in Indonesia. Inhabits primary lowland and montane evergreen forests.
How to spot
Look for its large size, glossy black body, and the male's striking red and yellow bill with the prominent 'knob' casque. The female's entirely black plumage and smaller black bill are also distinctive. Listen for its loud, deep, resonant calls.
