The Plain-pouched Hornbill is a large hornbill of Southeast Asia, closely resembling the Wreathed Hornbill but distinguished by its plain (unwreathed) gular pouch. Males have a large yellow casque and a yellowish gular pouch, while females have a smaller bluish casque and pouch.
Where to spot
Found in Southeast Asia, including parts of Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, and Peninsular Malaysia. Inhabits evergreen and deciduous forests.
How to spot
Distinguish from Wreathed Hornbill by the absence of the wreathed pattern on the gular pouch. Look for large flocks flying in V-formations during migration. Listen for their loud, deep, cackling calls.
When to spot
Known for significant seasonal movements (migrations) in large flocks, often between April and June. Resident at other times. Active during the day.
