The Rufous-necked Hornbill is a large and magnificent hornbill of the Himalayas and Southeast Asia, known for its distinctive rufous (reddish-brown) neck and underparts in males, contrasting with glossy black upperparts. Females are entirely black with white tips to their tail feathers.
Where to spot
Found in the eastern Himalayas (India, Bhutan, Nepal) and parts of Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, China). Inhabits humid broadleaf evergreen and deciduous forests at mid-elevations.
How to spot
Look for its large size and the male's distinctive rufous neck and underparts. The female's all-black body and white tail tips are also diagnostic. Listen for its deep, resonant 'hoo-hoo-hoo' calls, often delivered in a duet.
