Spotted

The Barn Owl is one of the most widespread owl species globally, instantly recognizable by its distinctive heart-shaped facial disc and ghostly pale plumage. It is a highly efficient nocturnal hunter.

Where to spot

Highly adaptable, found in open country, farmland, grasslands, and semi-deserts on almost every continent except Antarctica. Often found near human structures like barns, hence its name.

How to spot

Look for its ghostly pale appearance and silent, buoyant flight as it quarters over fields. Its distinctive heart-shaped face and dark eyes are key identification features if seen well. Listen for its characteristic screeching call, rather than a hoot.

When to spot

Primarily nocturnal, so best observed at dusk or dawn when it begins or ends its hunting forays. Less active during the day, usually found roosting in quiet places.

The Barn Owl's unique heart-shaped face acts as a parabolic dish, efficiently funneling sound waves to its asymmetrically placed ears, allowing it to pinpoint prey with incredible accuracy in complete darkness.
