Spotted
The African Grass Owl is a medium-sized barn owl native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is a specialized inhabitant of tall grasslands and marshes, often hunting by skimming low over the vegetation.
Where to spot
Sub-Saharan Africa, from the Sahel region south to South Africa. Primarily found in tall, moist grasslands, marshes, and sometimes open woodlands.
How to spot
Look for its typical barn owl facial disc, pale plumage, and disproportionately long legs. Best observed by cautiously scanning suitable tall grassland habitats at dawn or dusk, or by listening for its hoarse, reedy calls.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal, active from dusk to dawn, but can be seen hunting in low light.

This owl builds its nests directly on the ground within dense tussocks of grass, often creating hidden tunnels leading to the nest chamber for protection from predators.
