The Manus Masked Owl is a critically endangered and poorly known species of barn owl, endemic to Manus Island in Papua New Guinea. It is a rare and secretive forest resident.
Where to spot
Endemic to Manus Island, Papua New Guinea, primarily in lowland rainforest.
How to spot
Extremely challenging to observe due to its rarity and dense forest habitat. Identification would be based on its characteristic Tyto appearance and its very restricted insular range. Listening for calls at night is the most likely method.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal. Observation is exceptionally rare.
This owl is one of the rarest owls in the world, with very few confirmed sightings, leading to significant conservation concerns due to ongoing habitat loss on Manus Island.
