Spotted
A small to medium-sized swift endemic to the Philippines, characterized by its long, stiff tail spines, which are typical of the 'spinetail' group. It's an agile flyer over forested areas.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Philippines, found on various islands including Luzon, Mindoro, Negros, and Mindanao. Prefers lowland and montane forests, often seen over clearings.
How to spot
Look for a relatively small swift with a short, square tail that appears to have spiny projections (if seen well). It exhibits a fast, erratic flight typical of spinetails. Often seen in small groups.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round within its range, typically active during daylight hours while foraging for insects. Look during warmer periods of the day.
Like many spinetails, it uses its stiff, protruding tail feathers to brace itself against vertical surfaces like tree trunks or cliff faces when roosting or nesting.
