Where to spot
Found in high mountainous regions across Eurasia, from the Pyrenees and Alps to the Himalayas and parts of China. In winter, it may descend to lower altitudes, inhabiting rocky gorges, quarries, and old buildings.
How to spot
Scan large rock faces and cliffs, looking for a grey bird with a long, slender, downturned bill and characteristic butterfly-like flashes of its crimson wings. Listen for its distinctive, piping, whistling calls.
When to spot
Best observed in summer at high altitudes on its breeding grounds. During winter, it descends to lower rocky areas, making it potentially easier to spot.
