Spotted
The Volcano Hummingbird is a tiny, high-altitude specialist endemic to the mountains of Costa Rica and Panama, often found in challenging, windswept environments near volcanoes.
Where to spot
Inhabits high-altitude scrub, paramo, and elfin forests on mountain slopes, particularly near volcanoes, in Costa Rica and western Panama.
How to spot
Look for them zipping among low-lying flowers at high elevations. Males often perch conspicuously on bare twigs. Listen for their characteristic high-pitched chirps and rapid wing beats.
When to spot
These hummingbirds are resident year-round in their montane habitats. They are most active from dawn to mid-morning and again in the late afternoon.

Despite its extremely small size (one of the smallest birds in its range), it is fiercely territorial, aggressively defending its feeding grounds against much larger hummingbirds.
