Humid lowland rainforests, particularly in the understory and subcanopy, across the Amazon basin in Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia.
How to spot
Often detected by its distinctive, thrush-like songs, which are clear and whistled. Look for it foraging quietly in dense undergrowth. The rufous tail can be a useful field mark.

Year-round resident. Most active and vocal in the early morning and late afternoon.
