Spotted
A plain, olive-brown bird found in the humid lowland and foothill forests of northern South America. It is best identified by its distinctive, somewhat buzzy, whistled song and often rufous-tinged wings.
Where to spot
Humid lowland and foothill forests of northern Colombia and northwestern Venezuela.
How to spot
Often heard before seen. Listen for its characteristic, whistled song. Look for it foraging quietly in the dense understory of forests. The subtle rufous wash on the wings can be a clue.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active and vocal during the early morning and late afternoon.
The distinct quality of its song, different from other schiffornis species, was a key factor in its recognition as a separate species.
