Spotted
The Variable Wheatear is a polymorphic species, meaning males exhibit significant plumage variation, ranging from mostly black to mostly white with black wings. It is a bird of open, rocky habitats.
Where to spot
Found across Central Asia, including parts of Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, inhabiting rocky deserts, arid mountains, and stony plains.
How to spot
Search in rocky, arid landscapes. Look for it perching conspicuously on rocks. Pay close attention to the extent of black and white in the male's plumage. Its characteristic tail-wagging is a good cue.
When to spot
Year-round resident in many parts, with some altitudinal or local movements. Most active during the breeding season (spring) when males are establishing territories.
