The Cape Robin-Chat is a familiar and melodious bird, characterized by its slate-grey upperparts, a prominent orange throat and breast, and a rusty-red tail. It is a common garden bird in Southern Africa.
Where to spot
Widespread across Southern Africa, primarily in South Africa, Lesotho, Eswatini, and parts of Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Inhabits various habitats from forests and fynbos to gardens and urban parks.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive orange throat and breast. It often forages on the ground or perches conspicuously in bushes. Listen for its loud, melodious, and often mimetic song.
When to spot
A year-round resident throughout its range. Most active and vocal during the early morning and late afternoon, especially during the breeding season (spring/summer).
