Spotted
The Green-backed Whistler is a subtly beautiful bird found in the Solomon Islands, characterized by its olive-green upperparts. It inhabits rainforests and disturbed forest areas on various islands.
Where to spot
Found in the Solomon Islands, including Bougainville (part of PNG but biogeographically part of Solomons), Isabel, Choiseul, and possibly others. Inhabits lowland and montane rainforests.
How to spot
Look for its olive-green back, greyish head, and paler underparts, which may have a yellowish wash. Listen for its distinctive whistled calls, which can be varied and melodious, typical of the family.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Active throughout the day, with calls most prominent in early mornings and late afternoons.
This whistler's plumage provides excellent camouflage amongst the lush green canopy of the Solomon Islands' forests, making it often a challenge to spot despite its vocalizations.
