The New Caledonian Whistler is a striking bird endemic to the main island of New Caledonia, characterized by its bright yellow underparts and a contrasting black head and breast band. It is a common and vocal forest resident.
Where to spot
Endemic to New Caledonia (Grand Terre). Found in a wide range of wooded habitats, including lowland rainforests, dry forests, and degraded areas.
How to spot
Males are easily identified by their black head, white throat, and broad black breast band separating it from the bright yellow belly. Females are duller. Listen for its loud, clear, and often complex whistling song.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most vocal during the breeding season, but can be heard throughout the year, especially at dawn and dusk.
