Spotted
The Giant Thrush (*Turdus maximus*) is a large thrush found in the Himalayas, distinguished by its impressive size and dark, often sooty, plumage. It is one of the largest members of the *Turdus* genus.
Where to spot
Inhabits high-altitude forests, sub-alpine scrub, and open slopes in the Himalayas, ranging from Afghanistan to Bhutan and China. Often found near the treeline.
How to spot
Look for its large size and dark, uniform plumage. It often forages on the ground, probing for invertebrates. Listening for its loud, clear calls and song, characteristic of large thrushes, can aid in detection.
When to spot
Resident in many areas, though some populations may undertake altitudinal migrations to lower elevations during harsh winters. Best observed during the warmer months (spring/summer) when it is more active and visible.

Its robust size allows it to occupy high-altitude niches where smaller thrushes might struggle, making it a prominent avian presence in the Himalayan landscape.
